Years ago, I used my respite hours to sequester myself for a three-day TACA conference when my kids were around four years old. I was desperate for early intervention, therapies, legal advice, neurological specialists, and parental support. For three days, my life was transformed. My children FaceTimed with me while I was at the conference, which was a big deal because it was one of the few times I had been away from my kids. From morning until night, I attended the conference, listening and learning from specialists, scientists, therapists, and nutritional support, and sat next to other moms and dads. For the first time, I was surrounded by parents in the same situation.
I heard Lisa Ackerman, TACA’s Founder and Executive Director, speak and saw her son Jeff’s dramatic progress and other adult autistic speakers – in their own words. Lisa hugged me like a family member in a way no grandparent, sister, or best friend could understand. This organization helps people for (practically) free—webinars online, and endless resources. In fact, the conference costs less than the parental meltdown meal after an IEP (Individualized Education Program) showdown with a clueless school. My kids are doing so well now, largely thanks to the support and resources from TACA. Having another mom mentor friend navigating a crisis is life-changing.
And now, Lisa’s son Jeff (who is a recent college graduate!) introduces the keynote at Ante Up and is performing his original music – watch out folks for a future TBD Savants collab! Calling all rockstars, Eddie Vedder??
After a decade, I’m a proud ambassador for TACA. This is NOT a sponsored post. It’s my small way to spread the word about how I found community and support for help you need now, especially if you’re waiting 18 months for a diagnosis.
A few years back, my boys were given the Hero Award among other young children and adults living with autism. It celebrated their heroic efforts in showing up every day doing OT, speech, school, life, navigating a society that isn’t always inclusive, and overcoming societal roadblocks. My boy insisted on staying in his suit and wore his medal until 2:30 AM, and even brought it to show his awesome accommodating hairdresser two weeks later!
TACA’s annual conference is coming up next month on October 18-20th in Costa Mesa, CA. They’ve got some awesome keynote speakers lined up! If you’re interested in attending, we highly recommend making it for the entire conference if you can or accessing it online.
